Flint River Greenway Extension

For the past few months, some running friends and I have been I've have been wondering about the work being done at the end of the existing Flint River Greenway.  When the work started, a Google searched  only uncovered relatively old information. I wasn't able to find anything related to an extension, let alone where it may go.  Checking the construction during a morning run, I discovered they were building a new bridge across the Flint river about 100 yards or so past the end of the existing greenway.

This morning I finally decided to go check it out from the opposite bank. It didn't take long to find what looked like the other end of the extension on old Highway 431 just before the river crossing.

The following map shows the current greenway (in green) which starts at the small parking area behind the Publix in Hampton Cove, and the currently under construction extension in yellow.  The gap between the two consists of about 100 yards of additional greenway on the finished side of the river, and a bridge crossing. The green line is about 2.1 miles.  The yellow line is about 1.2 miles, making the eventual end-to-end distance about 3.3 miles.

According to an article in the Huntsville Times, the extension should be complete sometime this fall.

This is the new parking lot just west of where old 431 crosses the Flint river.

This is the asphalt pathway leading from the parking area.  The river is just to the left.  For greenway follows the river for about the first half mile. Note the exposed area on the right.  This is being used as the access route for construction vehicles to get to the bridge area.

Not long after the parking area, the path becomes lined with trees on both sides.  The river is still just to the left.

This section is after the path leaves the river to cut through the narrow sections where the nature preserve and golf course intersect.  The greenway path and construction vehicle paths converge prior to this, so this area probably wont be paved until after all the bridge work is complete.

Here's a picture of the new bridge. The trail head for existing greenway is just on the other side, and just around the bend to the right.
